Pillsbury GF Cookie Dough First Impressions

Today's post was a little last minute, simply because I was shocked to find one of Pillsbury's new gluten-free products at a local grocery store today. I was unnaturally excited to find it, and felt the excitement warranted a prompt testing of the product, of course for blogging purposes. ;) Since this is the first time I've tried this product I'll categorize this as a first impressions post.

I'll start with facts and figures. This product comes in a refrigerated  14.3 oz. tub. It cost $4.49 at my local grocery store. It claims to produce 16 cookies. It is baked at 350* F for 11 to 13 minutes. The packaging also states that Pillsbury is a sponsor of the Celiac Disease Foundation.

Here are the nutritional facts. I know we all love reading labels. ;) There is no mention of what type of facility this product is made in. I *recall* hearing Pillsbury stating they are made in a dedicated facility but I cannot guarantee that. I will contact Pillsbury, confirm, and update here.
*UPDATE*: I called Pillsbury and they said that if they list a product as gluten-free it means (obviously) there are no gluten-containing ingredients but also that there is no cross-contact.

As I mentioned earlier, Pillsbury claims that making 1 tablespoon cookies yields 16 cookies. I assume they meant heaping tablespoons because my rounded off tablespoons yielded 24 cookies, of which we only made half (12). We placed them on a cookie sheet lined with parchment paper.

We baked these in a pre-heated oven for only 9 minutes since they yielded apparently smaller cookies than what was originally called for. They looked a little overdone but I think they were actually perfect, and I don't like crispy cookies.

After the cookies cooled it was testing time. I had 4 testers total, two gluten-eaters and two non-gluten-eaters. Our previous experience with gluten-free cookies had been a box mix, another pre-packaged refrigerated dough, and cookies from scratch. 3 of us thought they were great and tasted just as good as gluten cookies, which was not the case with our other experiences with GF cookies. The 4th tester, a gluten-eater with a more sophisticated palate, said they were better than the other gluten-free cookies we had tried, but still had a slight hint of gritty-ness present in gluten-free baking.
Both the texture and taste was good and these were eaten up by the 4 of us within a couple of minutes. Obviously they were easy to make with virtually no clean-up. I see this being a staple in our fridge for our occasional late-night cookie craving and look forward to trying Pillsbury's other new GF offerings.
